‘'What is this?'’. This is a room in the IKEA museum in Almhult. At this room you will be stimulated by all your senses.
Imagine, you wake up and the light is shining through the curtains, you decide to just stay a few more minutes in your bed because it is so warm and soft. At some point you decide it is time to get ready for the day, so you are, still a bit sleepy, walking to the bathroom. It is really bright in there, too bright if you ask me. Oke. Let’s take a hot shower, it will wake me up. The dust is all over the bathroom, but I don’t like to stop showering, as it is cold outside. A few minutes later I decide I don’t have an option anymore, so I am quickly running to dress me up for the day. Let’s make the best of it.
After a long day, livingroom is calling me. Couch is already waiting, candles are on fire. Softly, there is some classic music, and the smell of lasagne let me remember my early years, when mum was the queen in the kitchen. Now I am at home.
Are you recognizing all this? Probably you did. It is like a normal day in a lifetime of everyone. All this moments are made of different senses playing together to make you feel at home. That’s what IKEA also want, unfortunately they can’t sell your senses. What they can, is making furniture. You are the one who makes memories and stories out of this furniture.
So, that picture that I showed you before is a prototype of the livingroom in the IKEA museum. I made it so you can imagine how this space will look like in real. I can tell you a story, but the magic is in imagination. That’s what makes you feel enthusiastic about something that is just made of paper, row and carton. IKEA is also just making furniture out of materials. Your imagination and some senses can make it feel like a home!
See there the importance of imagination.
